Morning Meeting


"The Responsive Classroom (RC) is an approach to teaching and learning that fosters safe, challenging, and joyful classrooms and schools, kindergarten through eighth grade. Developed by classroom teachers, it consists of practical strategies for bringing together social and academic learning throughout the school day"

Morning Meeting

Each morning, students and teachers gather as a class to greet each other, share, and get ready for the day in a fun and inviting way. Morning meeting takes place in a circle in the following order:

1. Greeting- Greet each other by looking at one another, using each other's names, and using friendly voices and faces. By greeting each other, it makes all feel welcomed and safe to begin the day.
2. Sharing- Sharing provides practice in speaking in front of peers, and helps students make connections with each other.
3. Activity- Students have fun each morning by singing a song or playing a fun game. This reminds us that school is fun and it starts us off for a good day!
4. Morning Message- A morning message is displayed before students enter each morning. Usually there is an activity for them to complete before the bell rings at 8:55. The morning message also informs the students about the day. The morning message may also be used to reinforce academic skills students have been working on. 


Logical Consequences


Responding to misbehavior in ways that allow children to fix and learn from their mistakes while preserving their dignity.

1. Take a Break- This is used when a child needs a moment to re-gain self-control and get away for a minute. There is a "Take a Break" area in each classroom, and the child can decide when he/she has gained control and is ready to re-join the group.
2. You Break It, You Fix It- This does not only apply to breaking material things, it also applies to breaking someone's feelings.
3. Loss of Privilege- If a child's behavior does not positively reflect how an activity or job has been taught, then he/she will lose the privilege in participating in that activity for the remainder of the day, or into the next day. Loss of privilege can include anything from misusing a pencil to not walking properly in the hallway.


CARES

The Responsive Classroom approach is based upon the C.A.R.E.S. acronym. The social skills in C.A.R.E.S. stand for:

Assertion
Responsibility
Empathy
Self-Control
